What Should You Expect of Your First Visit with Dr. R. Alan May, DDS?
We know that choosing a new dentist can leave you wondering about their process.
Our dental team took the time to lay out what you can expect of our office so each and every one of our new patients can be comfortable during their first visit.
Initial Phone Call
Before scheduling your appointment, our staff will ask a few short questions so we can best prepare for your visit. These include:
- Do you have any teeth that are causing you pain or discomfort?
- When is the last time you had your teeth cleaned?
- Do you currently have dental insurance?
- Do you have current x-rays at another office?
We will then schedule your cleaning appointment during our convenient business hours.
Our new patient forms are easily accessed through our website, so you can fill them out at home and bring them to your appointment. If you wish to fill out your new patient forms at our office, we ask that you arrive 20 minutes early.
What to bring:
- A valid ID or driver’s license
- Your dental insurance card
- A list of current medications
Meeting the Doctor
You will get a chance to meet Dr. May before the cleaning portion of your appointment. After a review of your medical and dental history and any present concerns you may have, Dr. May will perform a head and neck oral cancer screening exam. Dr. May will then instruct the hygienist as to how to best proceed for your individual needs and start the appointment.
Our three hygienists have a combined 60 years of experience. They will take the diagnostic x-rays utilizing the ALARA principle of “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” in regards to needed exposure. They then use a combination of ultrasonic cleaners and specialized instruments to clean away tartar build-up and plaque. This combination of techniques results in an efficient and comfortable cleaning experience that is a pleasant surprise for most of our new patients.
Dr. May will come back and look at the complete picture of your dental health. He will diagnose tooth decay, periodontal (gum) issues, or any other dental disease present. He will then discuss with you options for treatment, as well as the benefits and risks (if any) associated with them.
Checkout and Payment
We will verify your insurance/dental benefits during your visit. Any portion that is not covered by your insurance will be collected at the time of your appointment. Upon request, we can verify this ahead of time, so you know what to expect. We will give you estimates on any dental work that needs to be done at our office according to Dr. May’s prescribed treatment plan, so you are aware of the amount due at your next appointment.
If you do not have insurance, we will talk to you about our in-house option that will provide you an opportunity to save a significant amount of money on your initial visit and any dental work that you may need.
Once You Are an Established Patient
We will send you a courtesy postcard two weeks prior to your appointment reminding you of your reservation. The day before your appointment, we will send a convenient confirmation text message or phone call based on your preference. If you have any dental or tooth problems that develop between your exams (chipped and broken teeth or toothaches), know that we will work to get you in as soon as possible as an added benefit to being an existing patient.
