General Dentistry Roanoke, VA - Dental Exam | Dr. R. Alan May, DDS - dental-contentGood oral hygiene is imperative for maintaining not only your teeth, but also your overall health!

At Dr. R. Alan May, DDS’s office, we’re committed to the health and comfort of every one of our patients. One of the most important reasons to visit the dentist is to have your teeth cleaned by a professional hygienist. Plaque and tartar form on teeth over time, and can jeopardize your oral health. Plaque is soft and sticky, but regular brushing can usually remove most of it. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, which cannot be removed with your typical toothbrush and floss. Tartar accumulates below the gumline as well as on the surface of the teeth. If you don't remove plaque, you increase your risk of more severe problems with your teeth and gums later on, such as gum disease and possible tooth loss. Dr. May and his team use the latest in dental technology to ensure our patients’ teeth and gums are not compromised by plaque and tartar.

We get your teeth their cleanest with our Cavitron™ Ultrasonic Cleaner.

We use a Cavitron™ Ultrasonic Cleaner to aid in removing deposits of plaque and calculus (tartar) from your teeth, especially under the gum line and even in deeper gum pockets, in the case of gum disease treatments. This rounded instrument uses a cooling water spray and high-frequency vibrations to enable us to remove deposits on your teeth faster than with regular scaling (scraping) instruments. Your teeth have never felt so clean! As a bonus, patients report less discomfort with our Cavitron™ Ultrasonic Cleaner.

Now offering AIR-FLOW® Therapy for stained teeth, implants, bridges, and orthodontic brackets!

AIR-FLOW® Therapy is available for use during cleanings at no additional cost. It works by using a special sodium bicarbonate powder designed to disrupt plaque and remove stains from teeth, crowns, and fillings. It does not damage the teeth and is more effective than traditional polishing at stain removal. This technology will allow you to leave the office on time with your teeth feeling their cleanest!

AIR-FLOW® Therapy can also be done with a different specialized powder that easily cleans around difficult areas such as implants, bridges, and orthodontic brackets (braces). These places are often difficult for patients to clean. A glycine powder is used to gently and thoroughly clean these areas. Glycine is a non-essential, biocompatible amino acid, and as such, is entirely safe for use around teeth, gums, implants, and bridges.

Filling choices to fit everyone’s needs!

General Dentistry Roanoke, VA - Dental Exam | Dr. R. Alan May, DDS - fillingThe silver-mercury amalgam filling has been the standard used in dental practices for decades. They are effective, affordable, and provided for by most insurance plans! However, many of our patients desire a more discreet filling, which is why we also offer the latest type of filling, a composite resin. We blend it in with the shade of a tooth, giving you a natural look! These fillings contain no metals and bond directly to the tooth. We are pleased to provide both options to our patients and will be happy to discuss which option is best for you.

In-house tooth extractions when you need them the most.

There are times when a tooth must be removed if damage or infection is too extensive and risks causing more problems. You will be relieved to know that we do most extractions right here in our office. If Dr. May determines that your extraction is better handled by an oral surgeon, he can give you a referral to our quality oral surgeons in Roanoke.

Do you need a customized night guard?

General Dentistry Roanoke, VA - Dental Exam | Dr. R. Alan May, DDS - Night_GuardA night guard helps to protect the teeth from unnecessary wear and even fractures or cracks due to grinding or clenching of the teeth, a condition known as bruxism. The signs of tooth grinding include a flattened appearance of the teeth, muscle fatigue in the head and neck regions, morning headaches, and gum recession. Sometimes, people may not even realize they are grinding their teeth at night. Dr. May will evaluate these areas and make recommendations that are appropriate for your individual situation.

While an over-the-counter guard may be recommended for tolerance, a custom fit guard will provide the most significant reduction of the harmful forces of clenching and grinding at night. The custom guards have the added benefit of being the most comfortable way to protect your teeth at night.

Our team treats both diabetics and pre-diabetics successfully.

Fluctuating blood sugar levels inhibit your body's natural ability to fight off infections, including gum disease. Dr. May will help you understand how diabetes affects your oral health as well as helping you to manage the effects. You will receive compassionate and nonjudgmental care to address the problem and keep you healthy.

Dr. May and his team are committed to taking care of our seniors.

Teeth show signs of age, wear, and tear, just like our bodies. Fillings may weaken and produce gaps, allowing decay to set in near the filling. Teeth may have hairline fractures from years of use. Regular consumption of tobacco and caffeine dull the luster of healthy-looking teeth. If you take certain medications, the necessary amount of saliva in the mouth may be diminished. If you have noticed any of these telltale signs of aged teeth, regular check-ups are essential to address and monitor areas of concern. We stress the importance of a healthy diet and proper daily cleaning. If you ever experience bleeding gums or loose teeth, we’re here to help.

We invest in state-of-the-art sterilization for your safety.

We take all necessary precautions at our practice for your comfort and good health. Single-use tools needed for treatments are used once and then discarded. Other tools are sterilized in an autoclave, which is a specialized unit designed to clean tools to the highest level. This process is carefully monitored to ensure it meets the designated health standards.
